Capt Hale died after an improvised explosive device detonated while on foot patrol near Sangin in Helmand province. He and Rfn Daniel Wild had been trying to carry LBdr Matthew Hatton, injured in an earlier blast, to safety when they were hit by a second bomb.
Aged 42, Capt Hale was born in Bournemouth. He joined the military at age 16 in 1983 and served missions to Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as a posting in London on ceremonial duties. He also attained a Masters in Psychology degree. Selected for a commission, he managed the careers of almost 1000 soldiers in the 1st Battalion, The Rifles as four regiments merged to form The Rifles in 2007. He was appointed the Battle Group Logistics Officer for operations in Afghanistan in summer 2009. Tremendously fit, he enjoyed cycling, rowing and rugby. Tributes described him as a extraordinary professional who touched the lives of so many people over more than two decades of service.
A devoted family man, he will be missed by his wife Brenda and their two daughters, along with other family and friends.
A funeral with military honours was held in Hillsborough Parish Church, County Down, NI on September 2, 2009.
