The Rev. Marshall Clayton of Monteith Cove, Sylva, Jackson County, NC was a native of Henderson County. He lived most of his life in Jackson County. He retired from Mead Corporation. He was a member of Woodmen of the World. His pastorates included Moses Creek Baptist Church, Long Branch Baptist Church, and Laurel Branch Baptist Church. He was the son of John Everett and Minnie Miller Clayton.

He was married to Elizabeth Rogers Clayton. They had two sons and four daughters: Sons - Thomas, who died as an infant and Ralph Olin "Bud". Daughters: Clara Belle Wilkey-Cogdill, Mary Nell Nations, Patsy Sue Paris, and Betty Lou Justice Greene.

Marshall had three sisters. Vergie Eleanor who married Tom Grant, Lillie Emmaline who married C.B. Waldroop, Sr. and then Jerald Pannell, and Sally Elizabeth (Lib) who married Carl Davis.
