GROOT, JOHN A. was born May 8, 1820.
His father, Aaron Groot, lived at Oskosh, Wisconsin, in later years and was a member of the State Legislature for a number of years.
The family was of Holland origin. [Originally the name was DeGroot.]
John Groot was born near Schenectady, N.Y. He was a shoemaker by trade.
On August 25, 1842, he was married to Eliza J. Heath.
He removed with his family from New York to Wisconsin, thence to Akron, Ohio, thence to Kipton in 1857.
He first lived in the Will Eggleston house, before it was remodeled, and had his shoemaker shop in a front room. He died Feb. 2, 1892 and the wife on Sept. 11, 1907.
Their children were:
George A. Groot, b Aug. 3, 1843, married Maora A. Sage, of Huron, Ohio, Dec. 12, 1872, and lived in Cleveland where he became a well known lawyer.
Mary O. Groot, b Oct. 15, 1844, married, 1st, July 3, 1864, Horace Baker, 2nd William Wright, and lived in Norwalk, Ohio.
Cornelius P. Groot, b March 15, 1846, went to Utah when a young man and married there, but removed to Los Angeles, Cal.
Helen C. Groot b Jan. 15, 1848, in Salem, O., married John Padley June 16, 1875, and lived in Philadelphia.
Harriet M. Groot, b July 13, 1849, married, Dec. 16, 1868, James Lees, of Henrietta, and died July 16, 1915.
Leanna D. Groot, b Jan. 30, 1851, married, Feb. 27, 1870, Augustus J. Hubbard, and died in Kipton in 1917, in the old home, which she had remodeled, being a widow when she came there.
HARRY H. Groot, b May 17, 1852, married, Oct. 1, 1874, Mary, daughter of William Coltrin, and became owner of the Coltrin farm and lived there until his death Feb. 15, 1929. His widow and son occupy the home farm.
Ida J. Groot, b June 8, 1854, married William Kaiser Oct. 3, 1883, and died Nov. 17, 1915.
