COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY - 06/14/2009
SCHWARTZEL - James William, 87, of Stone Mountain, GA, died Saturday, June 13, 2009. He was born in New Albany, IN, the seventh of nine children to Gertrude and Joseph Schwartzel. He was commissioned into the Navy on August 20, 1943 and proudly served his country in World War II. His career was spent in sales and he retired as the Southeast regional sales manager of the Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. in 1980. Jim was devoted to his family, his church, his community and loved the games of golf and poker. Upon retirement he volunteered weekly at the Crossroads Community Ministries Soup Kitchen in Atlanta, he drove for Eye Care and participated in recycling efforts with the Newspaper Boys. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Anne Callaghan Schwartzel; his children: Joseph C. Schwartzel and his wife, Mimi; Mary Lou Barter and her husband, John; Catherine A. Gramling and her husband, Ron; Anne M. Shoemaker and her husband, Robert; and Christine P. Kanne and her husband, David. Jim is also survived by his 14 loving grandchildren, Jim Schwartzel, Jodi Rienzo, Jack Barter, David Barter, Margie Barter, Tricia Greim, Aaron Henry, Kelli Morrison, Nathan Henry, Chrissie Shoemaker, Carolyn Shoemaker, Matthew Shoemaker, Jonathan Kanne, Christopher Kanne; and 15 great-grandchildren, JC Schwartzel, Katherine Schwartzel, Ellie Rienzo, Evelin Rienzo, Maddie Barter, Avery Barter, Matthew Barter, Emily Greim, Rachael Greim, Kyle Greim, Allison Greim, Christopher Henry, Madyson Henry, Izzy Morrison and Sophie Morrison.
