In the 1870's, her mother died and her father remarried. On the 1880 census, despite still being only about 15, she is living in the household of Peter and Irena Pratt Johnson, and called a servant.

Also in the Johnson household was Frank Nichols, son of Peter Johnson's sister, Hannah Johnson Nichols. Nettie and Frank married.

The couple owned and operated a farm on the east side of the Happy Valley Road about a half-mile south of Route 104 in the Town of Williamstown. They had a lovely home.
