Christopher Columbus, known as Tass, was the son of William "Bill" and Cinthia Lynn Birchfield who lived in Graham County, NC and Blount County, TN. He married Prudie Ann Cable of Hazel Creek in Swain County, NC. When the National Park Service took over the community, they moved to McDowell County where many of the Swain County residents relocated.

Tass and Prudie were the parents of Charlie, a twin to Alice, who was buried in the Proctor-Bradshaw Cemetery at age 7. Their other children were Jesse Adam, Alice, Samuel Cass, Beulah, and Bertha.
