He attended Brown University and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts with honors degree in English. During his time at Brown, he also spent a sabbatical at the Institut de Patheon, Paris, where he perfected his knowledge of the French language. His fraternity was Psi Upsilon, Sigma Chapter.
In company with others of his generation, he enlisted for military duty, first in the navy and then in the army reserve, in the course which service he returned to France for the second time. His military obligation continued until 1956, when he received an honorable discharge.
His professional career was spent in the world of international finance. He practiced investment banking on the East and West Coasts, becoming a member of the New York Stock Exchange and, after taking up residence in San Francisco, joining the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange.
On Monday, August 4, 2008, he collapsed once and was admitted to University of Virginia Medical Center. Valiant attempts were made by the doctors and nurses in the Coronary Care Unit to save his life, but it was not to be. He died, quietly and peacefully, in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday, August 10, 2008.
His cremation took place on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, in Charlottesville and was carried out through the good and kind services of Hill and Wood Funeral Homes funeral directors.
