Lone Tree Reporter, Thursday, October 28, 1937

Mrs. John P. Burr, 74, passed away at her home in Lone Tree Thursday evening at about 5 o’clock, never regaining consciousness after a stroke which she suffered the previous Tuesday evening. She had been in poor health for about a year and one half.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Reformed church, of which Mrs. Burr had been a member for nearly 50 years. The service was in charge of the Rev. Orval Egbert, pastor of the church, and the sermon was delivered by the Rev. Marcus L. Bach, of Iowa City, a former pastor of the church. Pallbearers were A. E. Baumer, H. C. Buell, Dr. C. M. Cantrell, E. D. Carl, George Mueller and Karl E. Wiese. Music for the service was furnished by a quartet composed of Miss Alice Dragstedt, Mrs. W. H. Yakish, E. C. Green and W H. Yakish, accompanied by Mrs. Karl E. Wiese, who sang “Asleep in Jesus”, “Abide With Me”, and “Beautiful Garden of Prayer.” Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Burton Coffin of Brighton, Mrs. M. R. Griebel, Mrs. Chas. A. Hacke of Sac City, and Miss Viola Schuessler.

Interment was in the Lone Tree cemetery.

Out of town relatives here for the services included Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Tipton of Preemption, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Bert Denning and Dorothy of Joy, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Ben Burrows of Reynolds, Ill., and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Reynolds of Princeton, Iowa.

Mrs. John P. Burr, nee Anna Mary Stock, was born near Montpelier, Iowa on October 17, 1863, of English parentage, the daughter of John and Emma Reynolds Stock.

At an early age she moved with her parents to the farm northeast of Lone Tree which is now the home of Fred Stock. Here at the age of 21 she was united in marriage to John P. Burr. Together they moved to a farm one mile north of the Stock home where the family home was maintained for 42 years. Six children were horn to this union.

They moved to Lone Tree in 1926, having built a new home on the site of the First Christian church.

A happy occasion was the observance of Mr. and Mrs. Burr’s Golden Wedding anniversary celebrated on February 20, 1934, first at the home with a family dinner, and then in the church basement.

On March 25, 1936, Mrs. Burr was stricken with hemmorrage back of the retina resulting in only partial vision. This ordeal left her in a weakened condition, yet she was ever hopeful and always planning for the day when her eyes would again be better and her health improved.

Death came gently after a week of restless weariness. On October 19 she suffered a stroke which left her right side paralyzed. She never wakened to consciousness, and passed away on the evening of October 21 despite the aid of a trained nurse and the watchful ministry of the family.

She leaves to mourn her departure: her husband and five children, Pearle of the home, Mrs. Emma M. Kile of West Liberty, Vernon E. of Lone Tree, Lloyd F. of Lone Tree, and Mrs. Alice L. Musser of Walford. One son, George N , preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1919. He was the husband of Mrs. Mabel Burr and father of Letha. Four brothers, George, William F. Elmer L. and Fred Stock, and eight grandchildren, Raymond, John and Howard Kile, Letha, Margaret Ann, Lloyd, Junior, Dale and Ruth Burr, also survive her.

Mrs. Burr had attained an age of 74 years, 4 days. She was baptized and confirmed in the Reformed church of Lone Tree on April 14, 1889. She was an unusually faithful attendant at the church services, a loyal member of the Missionary Society, and a constant servant of the congregation and its activities.

Her passing will be mourned by members of this congregation and a host of friends.
