2nd Lord North was the son of Sir Edward North, 1st Lord North and Alice Squire. He married Winifred Rich, daughter of Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich and Elizabeth Jenks. He was educated at Gray's Inn, London. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Cambridgeshire in 1555 and 1559 and then later from 1563 to 1564. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in January 1558/59. He was Commissioner of Musters in 1565. He became the Ambassador to France in 1574, then held the office of Provisional Governor of Utrecht in 1586; of Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire in 1588.
