Mrs. Mary Snyder Wilfong, 62, a Highland County native, was killed outside her Henrico County apartment late Sunday night in what police said was an apparent robbery attack. Mary's Hospital. A medical examiner said she died of a head wound inflicted with a blunt instrument. Mrs. Wilfong's home was located near Willow Lawn Shopping Center. She was born Feb. 20, 1916 in Highland County, a daughter of the late Charles Dennis and Ruth Whitlock Snyder. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Betty Jo Rexrode and Mrs. Lois W. Nuckols, both of Staunton, Mrs. Patricia W. Hull of Monterey, and Mrs. Thedoshia W. Samples, of Falls Church; two sons, William Wilfong of Calumet City, ILL., and Scott Wilfong of Manassas; two brothers, Alfred Snyder of Waynesboro and Edgar Snyder of Richmond; and thirteen grandchildren. Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday (today) at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Betty Johnson and Dr. Carl Douglas. Burial will be in Union Chapel Cemetery.

The funeral for Mary Snyder Wilfong, who was bludgeoned to death outside her Richmond home Sunday night, September 30, 1979, was held at 2pm on Thursday, October 4, 1979, in McDowell. The funeral was conducted at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Betty Johnson and Dr. Carl Douglas. Burial was in Union Chapel Cemetery.
Police reported that Mrs. Wilfong, 63, was returning from a private-duty nursing case when she was attacked outside her apartment near Willow Lawn Shopping Center. Police said the woman's purse was missing and that they believed robbery was the motive for the attack. A family spokesman said Tuesday, police had made no arrests in the case.
Mrs. Wilfong, formerly of Mill Gap, was born February 20,1916 in Highland County and was a daughter of the late Charles Dennis and Ruth Whitlock Snyder.
Surviving are four daughters, Betty Jo Rexrode and Lois W. Nuckols, both of Staunton, Patricia W. Hull of Monterey and Thedoshia Samples of Falls Church; two sons, William Wilfong of Calumet City, IL and Scott Wilfong of Manassas; two brothers, Alfred Snyder of Waynesboro and Edgar Snyder of Richmond; and 13 grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7pm-9pm on October 3, 1979, at the funeral home.
