Wreath Dropped To Honor Ensign Sammy Edwards.
United States naval aircraft droned over the Pacific ocean Monday and dropped a memorial wreath into the waters 30 miles of San Diego where Engisn Sammy Louis Edwards, 22, of Ritzville was killed last Wednesaday afternoon.

Memorial services were held at the San Diego naval station where Ensign Edwards' anti-submarien fighter squadron is based. Attending the services were his parents. Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Edwards of Ritzville; his 17 year old sister, Nancy and his 12 year old brother, Timothy.

Reports from San Diego said the fatal accident occurred while the young Ritzville flier was piloting a Gruman Bearcat on a routine training mission. The pilot of the campanion plane in the formation declared that the engine in Ensign Edwards' plane stalled suddenly and the craft plunged from low altitude into the ocean.

Ensign Edwards was born in Ritzville Sept. 17, 1925 and was graduated from high school here in 1943. He enrolled in the navy's waretime V-12 program then spending four semesters at Whitman college where he became a member of Beta Theta pi Faternity. He receivbed pre-flight training at St. Mary's college in California and at Norman, Oklahoma. He took his intermediate training at Corpus Christi, Texas and advanced at Pensacola, Florida.

After receving his commission, Ensign Edwards was trained in fighter planes at Banana River, Florida and then was assigned to Bearcat. The Ritzville ensign would have been in the navy five years this October. He had only recently re-enlisted for another year. When that expired, according to friends, he planned to study aeronautical engineering at the University of Washington.

Besides his family, immediate survivors include his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Nora Edwards of Ritzville and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Lettie Tiller, also of Ritzville.
