R. E. Edwards Services Held, Career Spans Many Activities
Funeral services for R. E. (Skinny) Edwards, a well-known Ritzville resident who served the city for many years, were held Friday at the chapel of the Danekas Funeral Home with Rev. Alfred Waln officiating.
Edwards died suddenly Wednesday morning, Aug. 31, of a heart attack shortly after he began work at the Adams County Insurance Agency. He was 64.
Interment was at Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Pallbearers were Bert Kendrick, Edward Cross, Donald Danekas, Don Low, Jim Kadlec and Jake Hoefel.
Honorary pallbearers included Elmer Schoessler, Bill Thiel, Wally Proctor, Albert Wolsborn, Robert Newland and Jack Kittel.
Ray Ellsworth Edwards was born in Walla Walla on Oct. 11, 1895, and moved to Ritzville with his parents, James Samuel and Nora (Harris) Edwards in the spring of 1898. He resided here since that time.
He attended the Ritzville schools and was graduated from Ritzville high school in 1916, where he was a member of the undefeated basketball team of 1915-16.
He enlisted in the air corps during World War I and afterwards returned to Ritzville and was appointed deputy clerk of the superior court and served until 1926, when he resigned to accept the position of assistant postmaster. In 1932 he was appointed postmaster at Ritzville.
In July 1936, he purchased an interest in the Adams County Abstract and Insurance company and was elected the manager of that corporation. The company sold the abstract portion of the business and renamed the corporation The Adams County Insurance Agency.
Early this year he sold his interest in the insurance agency to Don Low and planned to relinquish the management and retire in October.
In 1924 he was married to Gertrude Morach, who survives him with two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Stage of Hoquiam and Mrs. Marilyn Schoesler of Ritzville. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and his brother, S. E. (Skee)
Edwards of Ritzville.
He was a active member of Trinity Methodist church and served on the official board many years.
He was a member of the chamber of commerce, served on many committees and was vice president of the oganization one year. As a member of the Lions club he had a perfect attendance record for almost 20 years and always was
interested in civic improvement and activities.
He served as city councilman followed by eight years as mayor of Ritzville. He also was a member of the American Legion and the Adams County Historical Society.
