Known as Johnny Clay, John and his twin Jesse were born to William "Bill" and Cinthia Lynn Birchfield in Graham County, NC. The birthdate above was listed on his application for Social Security. When he was still young, his parents moved to the Tollgate House in Blount County, TN near Deal's Gap, NC where they collected the road toll just as Cinthia's stepfather Columbus Jonas Lynn had done during the Civil War. While young and handsome,in 1905, Johnny married Margaret "Maggie" Nichols, daughter of Sallie Cooper Nichols and stepdaughter of Albert Nichols. Johnny and Maggie had two children: Clifford and Amanda Lee. Their marriage didn't last, and Johnny had remarried before Maggie died suddenly in 1915 from "milksick fever". She had another child, Fred, who was four years
at the time of her death. DNA shows his father was a Price from Pennsylvania. The children were taken into the home of Maggie's parents to raise and they informally changed the surname of the children to Nichols.

Johnny's second wife was Anna "Annie Birchfield", daughter of Milburn and Rachel Williams Birchfield. They had three children: Edd, Marion Howard, and Tom. Tom was killed in Rome, Italy, during WWII.His Find A Grave memorial number is 56305670. Marion was a career soldier.

John married Engledove Farley the third time. She was much younger than he was and the marriage was short-lived.

Johnny was a brilliant man, but troubled by mental illness periodically. He was creative and an inventor, though uneducated. He spent his last few years in a mental hospital in Morganton, NC where he died. He is buried near his brother Christopher Columbus Birchfield in McDowell County.
