Death Claims John Eells--

John Henry Eells, pioneer resident of Mantrap township died Oct. 16, 1953, from old age infirmities at the age of 74. John, as he was familiarly known to all, had been in poor health for many years, and since the passing of his devoted wife just one year ago, had failed rapidly.

John Henry Eells was the youngest child and the last living member of his family. He was born to Nathaniel Edgar Eells and Susan Huss Eells on September 26, 1879 at Gravity, Iowa. The greater share of his younger boyhood was spent at Auburn, Nebraska with his three brothers and one sister. It was there he received his education.

He met and married Ethel Mathes on November 5, 1902. To this union four children were born; Cleo, the eldest son, now deceased; Desma of Houston; Katie of the Dorset community; and Millard (Bud) at home.

Mr. and Mrs. Eells came to the Mantrap community the Spring of 1917, when most of the land was virgin and in timber. There through hard endeavor and effort they made for themselves a home and place in the community.

John and Emma Eells celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in July of 1952 with the entire Mantrap and Nevis community joining them in the happy festivities. Then, on October 18 of the same year, Mrs. Eells passed away, just one year before the passing of her husband.

Mr. Eells is survived by his three children; Bud, Desma Sims and Katie Hearty; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all of whom had been here in July to visit him. There are also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 20 from the Nevis Church of Christ with Rev. Ronald Keeler officiating. Pallbearers were Lee Pangburn, Gus Kellner, Henry Hanson, Jens Jenson, Togey Hensel and John Bail, old friends of the family.

Interment was made in the Nevis cemetery by the side of his wife and companion of fifty years.
