Death of Jacob H. Hershey, of Silver Spring, at the Advanced Age.

The many friends of Jacob H. Hershey, a prominent resident of Silver Springs, will learn with regret of his death, which occurred on Thursday at noon, at the residence of his son, Abraham L., from the infirmities of age, he being in his eighty-seventh year, having been born October 5, 1817, in Rapho township.

Mr. Hershey belonged to one of our country's oldest and best-known families.

The deceased was raised on the farm of his father, the late Abraham Hershey, and then learned the saddlery trade, working at it in this city until 1838, when he moved to eastern Ohio.

After two years he returned to Pennsylvania, continued at the trade seven years longer, and then settled down to farming in West Hempfield township.

In 1841 he married Miss Susan L., Daughter of Abraham Long of East Hempfield township.

He continued farming until compelled by advancing years to retire.

He was a School Director for three years and for many years was Secretary of the Penn Mutual Fire Insurance Company.

For many years he was a collector for the Old Guard Mutual Fire and Storm Insurance Company.

He was a Republican in politics, his first vote being cast for General Harrison, The Whig candidate, in 1840.

In spite of his years, Mrs. Hershey was vigorous in mind and body and was an authority on local history.

He was an authority on local history. He was a practical, successful farmer, and was one of the first to start under-draining wetland.

All in all, he was one of the county's best citizens.

The deceased is survived by four sons, Washington L., Marietta, a former member of the Legislature; Abraham L., of Silver Springs, Justice of the Peace; Webster L., Landisville, and Benjamin L., Silver Springs.

A daughter, who was the wife of Rev. Levi Shank, of Mt. Joy, and one son are dead.

Twenty-six grandchildren survive.

One brother, Tobias N. Hershey, of near Sporting Hill, also survives.

The funeral took place at one o'clock Friday morning from the house, the services being held at 1:30 o'clock at the Silver Springs United Brethren Church, interment being made in the cemetery adjoining.
