Isaac Hanks was born in Ross County, Ohio, on September 5, 1833, the third child of William and Margaret (Thompson) Hanks. His siblings were Hester Ann [Conger], James, Elizabeth Jane [Foot], Margaret A., Mary Louise [James], William H., George S., and Cornelia N. [Scott].

On October 16, 1857, Isaac married Mary Ann Scott in Crawford County, Ohio. They had seven children: Frank J., Ida Jane , Margaret Mae [Myers], Alvin W., William Scott,
Augustus A., and Maude Mary [Myers].

Isaac enlisted in Company L, 10th Ohio Cavalry, on January 15, 1863. He was promoted to full corporal and served in the Union Army until September 24, 1865. In civilian life he was a farmer. He served as Justice of the Peace in Jay County, Indiana, from about 1886-1890.

On February 22, 1911, Isaac died unexpectedly of heart failure at the home of his son Gust, with whom he lived. His funeral was held in the Congregation Church in Portland with Rev. Henry Webb and Rev. S. A. VanLuven officiating.
