Oral History:
Fannie Tallman was on her own, except for her brothers, from the time she was about 16. Her father died of heart problems in 1915 and her mother in the big influenza epidemic of 1918. She put herself through business school and worked as a secretary at Jackson State Prison, then on to Wilson Dairy Company and Sherwin Williams Paint Company in Detroit. Fannie grew up in the age of the "Flappers". Women were just coming into their own. She had some great stories to tell of "speak easys", bath tub gin and rum running on the Detroit River during prohibition. She did not like the name she was given at birth---Fanny. When she was in her thirties, she had her name changed to Frances and had to get everyone to stop calling her Fanny.

As independent as she was, she still considered men a bit superior to women.

She met William Redmond in her late 30's and were married 30 Sep 1944 at Detroit, Wayne Co, MI. They were both in their early 40's. Uncle Bill worked for Chrysler Corporation. They lived on his wages and invested her wages in the stock market.

William Redmond died of a heart attack in 1977. Frances continued on. She never turned down an invitation to do something. In her eighties, she was taking trips to England, Scotland, Greece, and the Holy Lands.

While she and Bill never had any children of their own, they took a great interest in their nieces, nephews and their families. She was a true matriarch of the family and throughout her life made it her mission to keep her family connected. Always cheerful, upbeat, and sharp as a tack with a keen sense of humor and great wisdom, she was a joy to be around.

Frances died at home in 1997 at the age 96.
