MRS. ESTHER BREWER
Esther Alspaugh Brewer, daughter of Walter and Sarah Alspaugh, was born at Rego, Indiana, May 25, 1857, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ben Hamilton, in Chariton, Iowa, June 8, 1934, at the age of 77 years and nine days, after an illness of four weeks.
In 1876 she was united in marriage to Winburn Hancock. To this union were born seven children, three of whom preceded her in death. One son, Ben, died in August, 1896, a daughter, Mrs. Addie Rankin, in October, 1899, and a son in infancy.
Those surviving are George Hancock, W. P. Hancock and Mrs. Ben Hamilton, all of Chariton, and Mrs. Carrie Alspaugh, of Pawnee, Illinois. Death has also claimed five brothers and one sister. Her only sister who survives her is Mrs. Tenn Flickner, of New Albany, Indiana.
The early years of the deceased's married life were spent near Shouls, Indiana, from which place she and her husband moved to Iowa, locating in the vicinity of Columbia, where they resided a number of years. On May 21, 1890, her companion was taken from her, leaving her with six small children.
Six years later she was united in marriage to Francis M. Brewer. To this union one son was born, Charles F. Brewer of Chariton.
Besides the above named relatives she leaves seventeen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren to mourn her departure.
In 1930 she was again left a widow and since that time she and her daughter, Julia, have made their home together.
In early childhood Mrs. Brewer gave her heart to Jesus in conversion and several years later in 1909, during a camp meeting held near Lacona, she was gloriously sanctified wholly, to which experience she was a faithful adherent to the day of her death. A more consistent, faithful, christian character could not be found than this mother in Israel.
She endured the hardships and trials which came her way with patience and serenity, known only in the obedient child of God. Her Savior had first place in her life. The Church of the Nazarene of Chariton, of which she has been a member for a number of years, feels keenly the loss of this noble Christian character.
Her last illness was of four weeks duration. All that loving hands could do was done to relieve her intense suffering but the Master saw fit to say "It is finished" and she went triumphantly home to be with her Lord she loved so well, and whom she said many times was near her.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Nazarene church by her pastor, Rev. A. K. Jones, after which the body was laid to rest in Oxford cemetery to await the Ressurection morn.
