Richard was the eldest child (in a family of three sons and four daughters) of Richard and Alice Spilman of Danbury, County Essex, England. He married firstly in 1695 in Chelmsford, Essex, to Mary Baker of Tillingham, with whom he had a son, Aaron -- but Mary and Aaron died around 1699. Richard then left England in 1700 and emigrated to Middletown, Connecticut. He married soon after his arrival in Middletown to Alcey French, with whom he had a daughter, Mary, and five sons, Daniel, Richard Jr., John, Thomas, and Samuel. Richard lived the rest of his life in Middletown.
Although his gravestone says Richard died at the age of 85 (indicating that he was born in or around 1665), his baptismal record in Danbury parish, County Essex, England, shows he was baptised as an infant in 1674:
"1674. Richard Spilman the son of Richard & Alice his wife Bapt: March: 7. 1674."
Consequently, Richard actually died at the age of 76, not 85. (Richard's father Richard had died at about the age of 80 in Danbury, Essex, in mid-April 1718.)
