Milton Herbert Baer, of Atascadero, died peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, in his sleep surrounded by family.

Born in 1915 to immigrant farmers in Upland, Calif., Milton came to Templeton with his family in 1929 and graduated from Templeton High School.

Having studied piano at home with his older sister, he graduated with a degree in music from the University of Redlands, and later earned his master''s degree in Music Education from the University of Southern California.

He taught choral and instrumental music in Atascadero and in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District from 1949 to 1975, and served as Director of Music for the Community Church of Atascadero for 30 years.

An accomplished pianist and singer, he was active in musical performances throughout his long life, extending his energy and talents to performance groups such as the Atascadero Choral Club, Mozart Festival (Mozaic) and Cuesta College Master Chorale.

In addition to his artistic pursuits, Milton served in the army in World War II and remained committed to public service and volunteered for such organizations as Atascadero State Hospital M2 Program, Loaves and Fishes and Meals on Wheels.

As a family man, Milton worked in loving partnership with Ellen to build and sustain a home for his children, providing emotional, spiritual and moral guidance, as well as material security.

He was a gifted and generous gardener.

Milton is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ellen M. Baer; eight children Peggy Rolison, Martha Marchand, Alan Baer, Arthur Baer, Larry Baer, Celia Bewley, Winnie Baer and Patty French, and their spouses; 20 grandchildren and their spouses; and 15 great-grandchildren.
