John served as a Sergeant with the 208th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company I (Civil War). He also served as a private with the 133rd Pennsylvania, Company G.

The son of Henry & Catherina (Brenneman) Ayle, in 1860 he was a shoemaker and farmer living in Centre Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 26, 1863. He also enlisted in Bloomfield, Perry County, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg as a sergeant with Co. I, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry. Struck in the side by an artillery fragment April 2, 1865, during the final assault on the works outside Petersburg, Virginia, he was discharged by surgeon's certificate June 15, 1865, per general order.

He married Catharine F. "Kate" Baker and fathered Harry Benjamin (b. 01/??/68), Annie (b. @1870), Addie (b. @1874), and David (b. 01/04/80). John died in Centre Township, Perry County, from "lobar pneumonia."
