NEWPORT - John C. McGaughey, 74, of Newport died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at his home.

Born Feb. 21, 1927, in the Lake View community near Lake City, he was the son of L.D. and Verna Rogers McGaughey. He was a farmer and served on the board and as president of Jackson County Farm Bureau. He graduated from Dixie High School in 1944, then served in the Army Signal Corps. In 1948 he and his wife moved to the Newport area, along with his parents, to manage the farming interests of McGaughey Bros. Inc. He served first as vice president of the corporation and later as president, serving as such until his death. He was an active member of Newport First United Methodist Church and the men's Bible class. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Newport and the Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Patron of Newport Chapter 417, and later served as Worthy Grand Patron of Arkansas. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory and a Shriner.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ruth Nelson McGaughey; a daughter, Connie Stuart of Jonesboro; a son, John Mark McGaughey of Newport; and three grandchildren, Lee Stuart of Jonesboro, Amanda McGaughey and Ryan McGaughey, both of Newport.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Newport First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Glover officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery with arrangements by Dillinger Funeral Home of Newport.

Pallbearers will be Lee Stuart, Kelly McGaughey, Kevin McGaughey, Jack K. Griffin, Keith White and Greg Garner.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the men's Bible class of Newport First United Methodist Church, members of Crowley's Ridge Chapter 625 Order of the Eastern Star, Wes Upton, William Clark, and employees of McGaughey Bros. Inc.: John Jackson, Vallie Godair, Ricky Godair, Loyd Godair, Steven Prine and Clint Jackson.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 tonight.

Memorials may be made to Newport First United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
