Charles Dean Hoeness was born March 19, 1930 in Webster Township, Madison County, the son of Harry and Lois (Wilson) Hoeness. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Stine on August 14, 1953 in Reno, NV and spent 50+ years together in Winterset.


Dean worked as a mechanic. He owned and operated Hoeness & Sons Auto, which opened in 1979. He worked for Bob Brown Chevrolet for 16 years and was also a bus mechanic for the Winterset Schools. Dean was a member of Oak Grove Community Church of Madison County. He loved cars and attending auto auctions. He enjoyed John Wayne western movies, fishing and time spent at the casino. He liked to garden and loved sweet corn. Dean wouldn't miss the Iowa State Fair, where he enjoyed eating turkey legs and working at the Madison County Tourism booth. Dean also never missed the Old Thrasher Reunion in Mount Pleasant each year.


Dean died Monday, August 10, 2009 at Taylor House in Des Moines. He was 79.


Dean will be deeply missed by his wife, Dorothy of Winterset; his children, Dana Hoeness (fiancée, Yvonne Tribby) of Winterset, Deena Howell (David) of Winterset, and Darin Hoeness (Lucia) of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Cody McDonald (Angela) of Osceola, Jared McDonald (Tara) of Winterset, Mariah McDonald, Riley McDonald, and Kailee, Reed and Cole Hoeness of Des Moines; one great-grandchild, Jaden McDonald; and step-grandchildren, Lyndsay, Rae Lynne, Wesley, and Bailey Howell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
