Matt was born in Lakewood, NJ. Matt graduated from Southport High School in 1986 and entered into the U.S. Navy. He served on board the USS Midway on the flight deck and reached the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class, before being sent to Fighter Squadron Two in San Diego, CA, and then received his honorable discharge on June 24, 1994.
After faithfully serving his country he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and helped out working at "The Dragon's Claw" in the College Mall. Upon "The Dragon's Claw" opening up downtown he dedicated himself in full to "The Dragon's Claw" and was in the store more often than anyone else.
He moved into an apartment with three roommates and continued to live with one of the three until the time of his death six years later.
Upon "The Dragon's Claw" closing down, Matt worked for United Airlines and security at the Monroe County Public Library.
At the time of his passing, he was assisting when needed at Avalon in Bloomington, a local tabletop gaming store he was a regular at since it opened. He was finishing up paperwork to become a security guard as well as going to school for a paramedic.
Survived by:
Mother, Charlotte Blair, and extended family, close friends Herbert and Loretta Wall, high school friend Chuck Behler and wife Margaret, high school friend Cindy Chavez and godchildren Lochlean and Morainn, close personal friend Ellen Otte, close personal friend Nathan Qualkenbush, roommates Levi Gray and Michelle Wood, as well as a long list of other close friends and a legacy of characters in games at Avalon.
He was known for his long black trench coat, collection of weapons, storytelling ability, role playing game characters, skilled chess player, lover of music of all sorts, Civil War knowledge and for being a faithful friend.
Matt has been cremated and his ashes are going to be scattered with his father's in New Jersey, his birthplace. In place of the typical funeral services, there will be an open gathering of friends and family at Avalon in Bloomington on Pete Ellis Drive to remember the good times and pay respects.
