A daughter of the late Edward S. and Bessie S. Long, she was born on Sept. 23, 1928, in Mount Meridian, where she lived her entire life.
Betty is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bennie Jarrels; a sister, Joanne Scott of New Florence, Mo.; and two brothers, John S. Long and Edward S. Long, Jr., both of McGaheysville. She is also survived by her three daughters, Becky Ruckman and her husband, Mike, Sally Halterman and her husband, Dick, Mary Lou Dellinger and her husband, Dennis; and one son, Bill Jarrels and his wife, Shirley. All of her children live within eight miles of their mother and surrounded her with love and support throughout her life.
She was also very lovingly known as "Granny" to nine grandchildren: Michael Ruckman and his wife, Sandra; Andy Ruckman and wife, Holly; Ben, Abe and Molly Halterman; Mary Brooke Dellinger; Betsy, Katie and Trey Jarrels. She is also survived by one great-granddaughter, Mandy Ruckman, daughter of Michael and Sandra.
Betty graduated from Weyers Cave High School and Dunsmore Business College in Staunton, Va. She devoted her life to the nurturing of family and creating a beautiful home life for her husband, children and grandchildren. She will be remembered by many for her wonderful cooking and baking, which she shared so lovingly with family and friends in her home and at the river cabin.
Betty was a life-long member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, where she provided the alter flower arrangements for more than 30 years, taught Sunday school, served as youth leader and was active on various commissions. She was also actively involved in service to the Grottoes Food Pantry and a member of the Shendun Garden Club for many years.
A private graveside service will be held on Friday at the Mill Creek Church Cemetery. The casket will be closed. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 at their home in Mount Meridian. A memorial service will be held on Sunday evening, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren in Port Republic with Pastor Lee Kinsey officiating.
