Memories recorded by her granddaughter, Leda Ann Egbert Christensen

"My grandfather, John Calvert Egbert, was born 18 January 1842 to Joseph Egbert and Mary Caroline Allred. He was born in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. He married my grandmother, Ellen Bennett, on 5 July 1862. Little is known about Grandpa Egbert as he died before I was born. He died on 31 May 1897 at Fairview, Idaho and was buried there.

Grandpa and Grandma ran away to be married as grandma's parents opposed their marriage because she was only sixteen years old. They were the parents of ten children; four boys and six girls.

My grandmother, Ellen Egbert, was a busy lady. She was born 21 July 1845 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois to James Bennett and Ellen Pincock. Grandma took training as a midwife under Dr. Adamson of Richmond, Utah: also traveled many miles with Dr. Kackley.

She was asked once time how many babies she had delivered. She answered, " I don't know, I have never kept track. I only did what I could".

She wove carpets, robbed bees of their honey and milked cows. She lived on a 160 acre homestead that was later known as the Sarah Egbert place.

There were no doctors for miles and Grandma traveled whenever there was sickness or babies to be born to Chesterfield, Lund, Bancroft, Gray's Lake; many times she was gone several days.

She dressed well and was a very attractive lady. She did beautiful handiwork, tatting, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery, also pieced quilts by hand.

When her health began to fail and she was getting to the age that it was hard for her to do things, she lived with her daughter Nora McCann Rawlins, coming to stay at our house and with each of her children at times. But her home was at Aunt Nora's.

She passed away with heart trouble at age 82, 18 April 1927. She was buried in Fairview, Idaho."
