Dr. Cecil Hartzog Beard

Dr. Cecil Hartzog Beard, age 84, of Old Kings Highway, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Born May 23, 1919, in Bamberg County, he was the son of the late James Willie and Julia Fender Beard. Dr. Beard was a 1947 graduate of North Greenville
College, was a 1949 graduate of Furman University, was a 1954 graduate of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., and received the first honorary doctorate conferred by Charleston Southern University in 1970. He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1945 by Colston Branch Baptist Church in Bamberg County and served the following churches: Joyce Branch Baptist Church
and Seven Pines Baptist Church, both in Barnwell County, New Liberty Baptist Church in Travelers Rest, Motlow Creek Baptist Church in Campobello, Olive Grove Baptist Church in Northside, N.C., First Baptist of Hemingway, and Tigerville Baptist Church and First Baptist of Surfside Beach. He also was the interim pastor after retirement at Little River Baptist Church and Piney Forest Baptist
Church in Andrews.

Dr. Beard was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church in Surfside Beach, was a life member of South Strand Lions Club, was a 50-year Mason in Tyger Masonic Lodge No. 190 AFM, Tigerville, and was a member of Waccamaw Association Pastor's Conference. He served on the General Board of the SC Baptist Convention, Founding Board of Trustees of Charleston Southern University, Board of Trustees
of Connie Maxwell Children's Home in Greenwood, moderator for Waccamaw, Williamsburg and Southeast Baptist Association and on the board of directors for South Strand Helping Hand.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Hudson Beard; sons and their wives, Austin and Susan Beard of Andrews, David and Deborah Beard of Spartanburg, and Johnny and Michelle Beard of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, Wade Beard of Chicago, Ill., Jenny Beard of Columbia, Joshua Beard of Murrells Inlet, Hudson Beard of Spartanburg, and Ginny Luther of Macon, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Timberlake Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Timberlake Baptist Church, 9850 Highway 707, Myrtle Beach, SC 29588; or to Connie Maxwell Children's Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, SC 29648.
