He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He and Cpl Kumar Pun were on patrol in the market town of Gereshk, Helmand province, when a suicide bomber on a motorbike attacked. The blast also killed at least 16 Afghan civilians and over 30 were wounded.

Aged 34, Sgt Ross was born in Bangor, Wales but grew up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He was educated at Hazlegrove Prep School and Kings School, Bruton, in Somerset. He joined the Army in September 1996 and upon completion of basic training joined The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, serving in Germany, Canada, Poland, in the Balkans, and as a Phase One instructor. He transferred to the Royal Military Police in 2003 and was posted to the Weapons Intelligence Section in Northern Ireland. After serving various tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and Sudan, he deployed on his current assignment to mentor and train the Afghan Police.

Sgt Ross was described as a "giant among men" by his commanding officer and remembered for his dedication and leadership. He is survived by his wife Sheena Ross, also a serving member of the Royal Military Police, and other family members.

A military funeral was held at St Mary's Church, Bruton, Somerset on May 26, 2009 followed by a private service at Yeovil Crematorium.
