Mr. Bruce P. Phillips, 84, of Rockville, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda.

He was the husband of Patricia W. Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was the first NIH scientist to utilize germ-free experimental animals. He earned an international reputation for his studies on Entamoeba histolytica and many facets of intestinal amebic diseases and pioneering investigations of germ-free life. When he began his research in 1951, he was the first in the world to employ these germ-free animals in a detailed systematic study of an infectious disease.

He began his career in 1934 at the Government Printing Office and completed it the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, where he was employed as a research biologist.

Mr. Phillips came to NIH in 1940, where he served continuously except for a tour of duty in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was awarded the DHEW Superior Service Award in 1955 for his investigations of the parasitic disease, amebiasis.

Mr. Phillips was the author of 40 scientific papers. He was a member of a number of professional societies.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Carol Phillips, M.D., and Patti Jeanne Phillips, PA-C; and one son-in-law, Peter Ledakis, M.D.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at Christ Church Parish, Connecticut Avenue and Franklin Street, Kensington.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in Monocacy Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Inn at NIH, 7 West Drive, Bethesda, Md. 20814.
