Lt. Fred Evans Killed in Action

Parisian B-24 Pilot Died in Southwest Pacific Aug. 31

Lt. Fred Louis Evans, who would have been 23 years of age Oct. 10, was killed in action in the Southwest Pacific August 31, it was learned here Monday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Evans, Rt. 2.

Lt. Evans, pilot of an Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator bomber, and his crew had completed a number of successful missions before their mishap of August 31.

Born in Paris Oct. 10, 1920, Lt. Evans, a member of the First Baptist Church since childhood, attended Paris High School and Paris Junior College before volunteering into the Army Air Forces July 1, 1941. He received training at Chanute Field, Ill., Maxwell Field, Ala., Mississippi Institute of Aeronautics, Jackson, Miss., Bush Field and Turner Field, Ga.

He was graduated at Turner Field, Albany, Ga., Feb. 16, 1943, and commissioned a second lieutenant. The same day he married Miss Mary Elizabeth Kelly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Kelly of Jackson, Miss.

Lt. Evans went overseas for combat duty June 26, 1943, and was stationed in the Southwest Pacific area commanded by Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Sept. 9, Lt. Evans' wife, who lives in Jackson, received a notice from the War Department stating that her husband had been missing in action since August 31. There was no further communication until Monday, Oct. 11, when the War Department sent Mrs. Evans a second message--that her husband was killed in action August 31. Mrs. Evans then notified Lt. Evans' parents here.

Besides his parents and Mary Elizabeth Kelly Evans, Lt. Evans is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Fred N. West and Mrs. Raymond E. Sale of Paris and Mrs. Woodrow C. Wilson of Aberdeen, Washington.
