Sergeant Winchester was shot and killed after responding to a disturbance involving a drunk suspect. Sergeant Winchester believed the suspect was in the back yard and as he approached the screen door to the house the suspect, who was actually inside, fired through the door. Sergeant Winchester was fatally wounded. The suspect committed suicide a short time later. Sergeant Winchester had served with the Irondale Police Department for 15 years. He was survived by his wife and three children.

He was the son of George Winchester and Clara B. (Lynn) Winchester.

He was the brother of Harold Milton Winchester, Earnest Winchester and Virginia Mae Winchester Jones.

These siblings were all born in Morgan County and were orphaned in 1934. They lived at the Presbyterian Orphans Home in Talladega, Alabama according to the 1940 Census. At that time Harold was 14 years old, Rex was 10, & Earnest was 7.
