John served as a Sergeant with the 4th Delaware Infantry, Company D during the Civil War.

Sgt. John W. Warren, Company D, stood just under six feet tall and was a New Castle County, DE, carpenter when he enlisted with Capt. Curry on Aug. 14, 1862.

Col. Grimshaw appointed him 4th Sgt. on Sept. 27, 1862.

He was shot through the breast and killed in fighting at Bethesda Church (Battle of Cold Harbor) on June 2, 1864.

He is interred in a group grave with 5 other Delaware Soldiers who also were "Killed In Action".
