Inventor. Lenoir was born in Mussy-la-Ville, Luxembourg (an area which was annexed by Belgium in 1839 under the terms of the Treaty of London). He emigrated to France in the 1850s where he became interested in electricity, leading him to make inventions such as an improved electric telegraph. In 1859 he invented a simple two-stroke internal combustion engine which he patented in 1860. His design was soon replaced by improved engines such as those invented by Nikolaus Otto but he was honored by the French government, being granted citizenship in 1870 and the Legion of Honor in 1881.
