Ting was the beloved son of Thomas Tingeleson born in 1890 and his mother, Tomally Tingeleson born in 1894, both born in Norway. His father was a commercial fisherman in Connecticut. Ting's siblings were Marian Tingeleson born in 1916; Thelma Tingeleson born in 1922; and Lillian Tingeleson born in 1924. He served in World War II and Korea in the US Navy. He met his wife Joan at the Univeristy of Miami and they married in 1953. They had four children. Arnelle, Carlene, Joanette and Thomas. Sadly, Carlene disappeared on June 21, 1972 at Westgate Shopping Center in Macon. Later that night, the car she was driving, her parent's white pontiac station wagon, was found abandoned. She has never been found.
