He was the son of Jefferson Grimes and is listed with his father on the 1900 census in Buffalo, LaRue County, Kentucky. He married Mary Jane Pickerell on 9 November 1904 in LaRue County, Kentucky.

In the 1910 LaRue County Census, Virgil Grimes was head of household 229. He was 24 years old and had been married 5 years to; Mollie, age 22, who was listed as the mother of 3 living children. The children at home were: Emily B., 4; Nancy J., 3; Jennettie M., 1-4/12 years old. Their nearest neighbors were Elliott Pickerell and Arthur Morris.
In the 1920 LaRue County census, Otter Precinct (Morning Star area), Virgil B. Grimes was head of household 207. He was 35 years old and his wife, Mary J., was 32. Their children were: Emily, B., 14; and Jinnettie, 11 years old.
In the 1930 LaRue County Census, Virgil Grimes was family 43 in Buffalo district. He was 44 years old and his wife, Mary, was 42. They lived alone.
In the 1940 LaRue County Census, Ginseng and Howardstown area, V. B. Grimes was 55 and his wife, Mollie was 52. They lived alone.

OBITUARY: Monday night at a hospital in Princeton, Illinois. Mr. Grimes suffered a severe heart attack some weeks ago and had been a patient at Rosary Hospital in Campbellsville until Friday when he was taken by ambulance to Princeton. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Everett Andrews, of Wyanet, Ill., and Mrs. Arthur Gibson of Tiskilwa, Ill.; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two half-brothers. The body arrived at Williams & Miller Funeral Home in this city at 8 a.m. today (Thursday) and will remain at the Funeral Home until the funeral Friday afternoon at Two o'clock at Levelwoods Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Church cemetery. Virgil was a step-son of Nannie. He received his elementary education at the one-room Grimes School across Otter Creek that his father had donated. He was a tobacco farmer north of his brother James William "Will" Grimes near Howardstown, Nelson County, KY. He was a man with always a twinkle in his eyes and who enjoyed country music. Mollie was a housewife and a Herald-News correspondent for the Ginsing, LaRue County, community for several years. She was a marvelous cook and she had a great love for her children and grandchildren. She never knew a person whom she didn't like. Both she and Virg were members of the Methodist Church.

Virgil Grimes, age seventy-six years, a native of LaRue County and retired farmer of the Levelwoods section, died Monday night at a hospital in Princeton, Illinois. Mr. Grimes suffered a severe heart attack some weeks ago and had been a patient at Rosary Hospital in Campbellsville until Friday when he was taken by ambulance to Princeton.
