Mrs. Cates, a native of Calhoun County, S.C., was a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro and the Eastern Star. She retired from the First national Bank, after 35 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas B. Cates Sr., and her parents, Thomas R. Chaplain and Allie Graves Chaplain. Survivors include her son, Thomas B. Cates Jr. of Waynesboro; a granddaughter, Kathy C. Daniel and her husband, Tim of Athens; two grandsons, Ben Santana and Miguel Santana, both of Orlando, Fla.; and three great grandchildren, Katee Daniel, Mary Margaret Daniel and Donte Santana.
