~~ MAN WITH A BIG HEART ~~
HOBART BERNARD HOOTER

MY DAD RETIRED FROM THE UNITED STATES NAVY IN JULY 1966. HE HAD BEEN STATIONED AT SANGLEY POINT NAVAL STATION, CAVITE CITY, PHILIPPINES. HE LOVED THE PHILIPPINES AND IT'S PEOPLE SO AFTER RETIREMENT HE STAYED AND WORKED FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE IN CAVITE CITY. HE AND HIS RETIRED MILITARY FRIENDS HAD MANY PROJECTS TO HELP THOSE LESS FORTUNATE. THEY WOULD SPONSOR DESERVING CHILDREN TO REMAIN IN SCHOOL UNTIL THEY COMPLETED HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE. THEY WOULD GATHER CHILDREN WHO HAD FACIAL DEFORMITIES AND TOGETHER FORMED " OPERATION HAIRLIP. " THROUGH THEIR HARD WORK AND DUE DELIGENTS, FOUND WAYS TO SECURE COMMITMENT'S FROM LOCAL DOCTORS WHO THEN VOLUNTEERED THEIR MEDICAL SERVICES FOR FREE. THEY WOULD HOLD FUND RAISING EVENTS IN ORDER TO GENERATE THE MONIES NEEDED FOR MEDICINE AND OTHER THINGS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THESE PROJECTS. WITH THE HELP OF THEIR SPOUSES, WOULD SPONSOR AND HOLD COOK-OUTS, BAR-B-QUES, BAKE-OFF'S AND BINGO GAMES, ETC. TO RAISE THE MONEY NEEDED TO FUND AND BUY THE SUPPLIES REQUIRED TO BRING THESE OPERATIONS TO A SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION FOR THESE CHILDREN UNDER GOING THESE OPERATIONS. TWICE A YEAR THEY WOULD FUND DE-WORMING PROJECTS FOR THE YOUTH OF CAVITE CITY AREA. HE AND HIS FRIENDS SPONSORED AN ORPHANAGE, TO HELP THEM OUT. WHEN I WAS YOUNG I COULD NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHAT MY DAD AND MOM, WERE TRYING TO DO. BOTH OF THEM WOULD TELL AS " ITS CONTAGIOUS SPREAD IT AROUND. " THEY WOULD PUT MY BROTHER AND ME TO WORK STUFFING BROWN BAGS WITH THINGS LIKE RICE, COFFEE, TEA, SUGAR, ETC., TO HAND OUT A WEEK BEFORE CHRISTMAS SO THE LESS FORTUNATE WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT ON CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY WERE ARE ALWAYS THERE TO PROMOTE THINGS FOR THE COMMUNITY DURING 4TH OF JULY, MEMORIAL DAY, VETERANS DAY, PATRIOTIC EVENTS ETC. YOU WOULD ALWAYS SEE THEM DOING GOOD THINGS FOR OTHERS AND THE COMMUNITY. AS TIME HAS PASSED THESE MANY YEARS, MOST OF THE OLD TIMERS HAVE PASSED ON, MOST OF THEIR CHILDREN HAVE LEFT CAVITE CITY FOR THE UNITED STATES AND OTHER FAR AWAY PLACES. THE OLD LEGION POST THEY USED FOR THESE IMPORTANT PROJECTS AND EVENTS NOW SITS EMPTY WITH A " FOR RENT " SIGN ON THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. MY DAD AND HIS SHIPMATES WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN FOR THEIR " GOOD WORK. " MY DAD LOVES TO PLAY HIS RECORD PLAYER EVERY MORNING YOU WOULD WAKE UP WITH COUNTRY MUSIC ALL OVER THE HOUSE. WHILE DOING HIS CROSS WORD PUZZLE AT THE KITCHEN TABLE. AT NIGHT YOU CAN HEAR THEM PLAYING CRIBBAGE, OR SOME KIND OF CARD GAMES, WITH COUNTRY MUSIC IN THE BACK GROUND. THAT'S WHY " I LOVE MY PARENTS " AND PROUD OF THE THINGS THEY STAND FOR.
HE TELLS US " STARTING WITH BLESSING, GRATEFULNESS, UNSELFISHNESS MAKING LIFE'S JOURNEY. "...
