He was deployed with the Special Forces Support Group of the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
He was killed when his Jackal armoured vehicle was hit by an explosion followed by a small-arms fire attack while on patrol north of Lashkar Gah, Helmand province. LCpl Dale Thomas Hopkins and Pte Kyle Adams were also killed and a fourth soldier was hospitalised in critical condition.
Aged 25, he was from Alloa, in Clackmannanshire, Scotland and previously served in Iraq. He was described as the epitome of a professional soldier and a charismatic man with an irrepressible sense of humour. He is survived by his fiancée Leanne Kelly, who is expecting their first child, along with his parents John and Christine, sister Katrina and family and friends.
The funeral was held on August 29, 2009 at St. Mungo's RC Church in Alloa followed by interment in Sunnyside Cemetery.
