William was born in WI. to (Maria) Frederica nee Haas and David Bitter. He had three known siblings: Mary, James-1857, Edward E.-1858 both born in Pennsylvania, George and (Cora)aka Dora-1871 born in WI. The family lived in Dunkirk, Dane Co., WI. with the 1905 Census indicating their livelihood of farming involved the neighbors, the Frank and Sarah Emma Hernstine and neighbor newlyweds Knute and DinnieMaud Guelson.
William married Josephine Hernstine and together they were blessed with three children-Elmer grew to marry Adah Staniske Gilman and a step daughter, Lois Gilman Holzer.
Bertha remained at home single and on the homestead after her parents passed.
The youngest daughter Gladys lived a very short life of 7 months. She along with her parents William and Josephine all were placed at Wheeler Cemetery upon their death with eternal rest just a few years separating their final joining.
