Elmer was born in Dunkirk, Wisconsin to Mary J. and William Bitter;
His father had been farming in Hub City early in life. He had two siblings Bertha and Gladys. His father farmed in the area and he grew up with Bertha who was two years older.
His younger sister Gladys had a short life of only 7 months in the year of 1900.
In his later years he married Adah Staniske Gilman who was living in Stoughton with her daughter, Lois Gilman (Frank).
Elmer lived on R.R.#2 and operated a Stoughton tavern business.
He was laid to rest in peace and Adah joined him eighteen years later.
