He passed away in Frimely Park Hospital in Surrey after he contracted the H1N1 virus while travelling to Bisley with his battalion shooting team several weeks earlier. He was currently serving as a Sergeant Major Instructor with the Army Cadet Force.

Aged 30, he was from Coleraine, Northern Ireland. Bdr Porter, a Territorial Army volunteer, who also worked as a Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service manual technician, is believed to be the first person from Northern Ireland and the first UK serviceman to have died from the virus.

He was described as a great lad who was full of life and always good for a laugh. He is survived by his parents Esther and Ross, brother Jason, grandparents Rev. Ernest and Irene Porter, and other family and friends.

Funeral service was held at Coleraine First Presbyterian Church on August 8, 2009.
