William was from the area of Hillrow, Cambridgeshire, England, and was christened in Haddenham, Cambridgeshire, England. He was the son of Mary Cocksell Graves (died in England) and James Graves (born December 25, 1791, died July 31 1887 in Nebraska at the home of William's sister, Sarah Burton, Culbertson NE). There was another sister, Elizabeth Betsy Clatyon, who also lived in Nebraska.

William arrived in America in April 1853, married Hannah Yardy in Jun 1855 in Buffalo NY, moved to Benton county IN about 1858 where he became a naturalized citizen on Feb. 28, 1861. He moved to Kansas in Feb 1876, settling in Troy twp, Reno county KS.

According to an account written by a granddaughter (Lizzie Graves Campbell), transcribed from a family Bible birth & death record, the children of William & Hannah (Yardy) Graves were:
