Peter Jacob Hans was born in Tating, Germany on October 8, 1856 to Albert and Margarettia (Horst) Hans. It was there he was reared and educated. At the age of 26 he emigrated to the United States, going to Moline, Illinois.

Peter married Wilhelmina Jans at Moline on May 23, 1883. Wilhelmina was born in Tetenbull, Germany to Ahrend and Anna (Mohns) Jans. In 1885 they came to Kossuth County, locating a mile north of Germania, where they farmed until moving into Lakota in the 1920's.

Peter assisted in the organization of the Farmers Elevator Company, at Germania in 1910, was director of the Ledyard Creamery Company, treasurer of Ledyard Township School board.

They were parents of 11 children;all were born in Kossuth County except for Mary, who was born in Illinois.

Their children were John, Albert, Peter Jr., William, Bertha, Louise, Ahrend, Walter, and twins Hugo and Hubert.

Peter died at Lakota on May 20, 1943 at the age of 86. Wilhelmina died at Lakota on November 15, 1948 at the age of 88.
