Death Notice
The News (Frederick, MD) May 14, 1949

While his wife and daughter were attending a minstrel show at the Dickerson school Friday night, Harry Curtis Baker, 46, Dickerson, fatally wounded himself with a .22 calibre rifle. He died in Frederick Memorial Hospital this morning at 1:20 o'clock. A note which the man was reported to have left on the kitchen table of his home indicated suicide, officers said.

The shooting occurred between 6:40 and 10:30 o'clock, Montgomery County police said. Baker was in his home alone. When his wife and daughter arrived home, they found the note on the kitchen table and began a search of the property. They found him in an outhouse, about 150 feet from the residence.

Going to the home of George Droneburg, a neighbor, the family summoned Dr. Gordon M. Smith, of Barnesville, and the Montgomery County Police. Baker was treated on the lawn of his home and transported to the local hospital in the William B. Hilton ambulance. Physicians here said powder burns in his mouth indicated the wound was self-inflicted.

Officers did not disclose the contents of the note left by the man. They said the bullet had gone through his mouth. State Police here were assisting Montgomery county authorities in their investigation. The incident occurred in Montgomery county.

Residing in Dickerson his entire life, Baker was a painter by occupation. He was the son of the late Walter and Katherine Baker, of that vicinity. Besides his wife, Mrs. Ethel Baker, he is survived by the following children: William, Katherine, Betty, and Mrs. Irene Baughman, all of Dickerson.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Hilton funeral home in Barnesville Monday afternoon at two o'clock. Interment will follow in the Monocacy Cemetery at Beallsville.
