John Lewis Casner was the oldest of two sons of John L. Casner and Mary 'Polly' (Freel) Casner. In 1852 the parents of John Lewis joined a wagon train bound for Oregon. His mother died on the trail in NE.

His grandmother, Jincy Jane Casner, settled in OR. John Lewis lived off and on with his grandmother as did his younger brother, George Washington Casner.

After he reached maturity, John Lewis traveled with his father throughout the west. In late 1870s they were in the Texas Panhandle. On 7-4-1881 in Baylor County, TX he married Rebecca Clementine Crabb. To this union were born 10 children. They lived in Haskell County, Texas until 1902 when John and his father sold their rangeland in June 1902 to pay their legal expenses for their defense after they were charged with murder. They then moved by wagon to Lincoln Co., NM.

There are two family stories about the death of John Lewis. One is that in 1903 he was out hunting quail to feed his very large family when he had a heart attack, and that he was buried on the banks of the river where he died. The second is that he and two of his sons were working a cattle drive in 1904 when he died. They took him to San Antonio, NM where he was buried next to the Catholic Church in an unmarked grave. Neither story has been documented. Given the desolate barrenness of the area on the north side of the Capitan Mountains in Lincoln County, New Mexico where the family of John Lewis settled no doubt only the family knew of his death.
