Mr. Jones was a farmer all his life. He looked on the bright side of life in every respect. He was born in Barnville Co in the Windy Hill section near Healing Springs where he spent his boyhood days. In his teens he moved to Dr. Milhous place near Hightower's Mill in Bamberg Co. When he was 17 he enlisted as a volunteer in the War Between the States sometime in the early part of 1864 and fought during the remaining of the war. He replaced his wounded father in the Confederate Army of SC Volunteers for the battle of Crater in Virginia. He served as a Private in Company H, 17th SC Infantry, was captured Petersburg, VA July 30, 1864 Paroled to Elmira NY October 11 1864 and Qugusta, GA May 18, 1865. Soon after returning home he married Sarah Cornelia Still who was about three years younger than him and settled on her fathers plantation in sight of the old homestead where he spent the remaining sixty years of his life. He passed away after returning home from a visit with friends in Barnwell. He was in usual good health until 5 o'clock that afternoon when he was stricken by apoplexy and only spoke a few words at first then was unconscious for about two hours until the end came. He died at his home near Hilda, SC. His seat in the church and home are empty but kind deeds and cheering words will long remain in minds and hearts of family and friends.
