James M. MacKenzie , 72, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel and Vietnam War combat engineer who had also been a consultant marketing mobile military bridges, died of lung cancer Feb. 17 at his home in Fairfax.

Lt. Col. MacKenzie, a native of Boston, graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., and was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1952. He served in Korea, Japan and Vietnam, where he was commanding officer of the 1st Engineer Battalion in Da Nang.

He also served as an intelligence officer and commanded the Defense Mapping Agency School at Fort Belvoir before retiring from active military duty in 1976.

He then worked for the Ward LaFrance Co., which sent him to Morocco to help establish a military maintenance facility. In the last few years, he worked as a consultant in the Washington area for England-based Williams Fairey Engineering Ltd.

His military decorations included a Bronze Star with combat V.

He was involved in competitive youth swimming leagues. In 1971, he helped start a swimming program at Robinson High School in Fairfax.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Betty MacKenzie of Fairfax; three children, James M. MacKenzie Jr. of Clifton, Andrew N. MacKenzie of Wichita and Stacy M. Bowman of Fairfax; and seven grandchildren.
