Henry Boatman was born at Ripley county, Indiana April 25, 1838 and departed this life at Mt. Etna on November 12, 1923 aged 85 years, 8 months, 18 days. He with his parents moved to Illinois when a boy then to Missouri in 1854.

He was united in marriage to Miss Eva Selsor in 1850. To this union were born eight children, six of whom survive. Those having preceded him in death were a little girl Etta, his loving companion whose death occurred at Laredo, Missouri April 23, 1878 and one son Leon who departed this life at Mt. Etna March 31, 1915. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in the service on the 25th day of July, 1861. He was discharged on the 9th day of October, 1861 on account of a wound in his left foot, then on May 18, 1868 he again enlisted in Co. H. Princeton, Missouri, and was relieved from duty October 10, 1803 by Col. Williams. In February 1899 he came to Adams county, Iowa, and settled in Mt. Etna, the place where he made his home, and where he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel Skidmore, September 23, 1901.

He leaves to mourn his loss his faithful companion and six children: Oscar of Van Wert, Iowa; Lindsay of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; John of Lewis, Iowa; Frank of Hennesey, Oklahoma; Mrs. Hattie Bliss of Custer, South Dakota; and Charles of Ansley, Nebraska; also one brother, James Boatman of Spickard, Missouri. He has long been a member of the Christian church and has often expressed to his wife he was ready to go when his time came. In the passing away of Mr. Boatman Mt. Etna has lost a valuable citizen, the little folks a great friend as he was a lover of children and the community will long cherish the good things he has done.

Funeral services were conducted at the church of the Brethren Wednesday, November 14 at 2 p.m. by Rev. Harry K. Rogers. Interment in Mt. Etna cemetery.
