Betty Pope was a 1933 graduate of the University of Louisville where she majored in chemistry. After her husband's death, she was a science teacher at Waggener Junior High School in Louisville, 1959-69. She was a member of the Louisville Boat Club, the Woman's Club of Louisville, Filson Historical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, UDC, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, and Sigma Kappa Sorority. Her children were Shirley Elizabeth (1936-2014), James Houston, III, and John Pope Barr.
