Mary Bell was born in West Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of George Bell and his wife Mary Sigsworth. Her first husband was Ishmael Guyer and they had the following children: John Sigsworth, Mary Ann, Margaret, Ishmael Jr., Sarah Elizabeth and Rachel Maria Guyer.

After her husband's death in Keighley 1829, Mary and her children sailed to America, arriving in Baltimore in late 1829. She settled in Middletown, Frederick, Virginia.

Mary married the widower Joseph Larrick on December 8, 1831 in Frederick County, Virginia. They had five children together:
Joseph H. (1832-1864)
Maria Louisa (1834-??)
George Bell (1836-1907)
James Septimus (1838-1911)
Martha Ellen (1840-??)

Mary's daughter Margaret Guyer married John M. Larrick, her stepfather Joseph's son by his first wife.
